Reviews of products sold at expos and more by an average runner. Make me your guinea pig!
While gossiping with a Run Disney staff member at the recent Tinker Bell Half Marathon Expo, I got a small scoop on the reason behind the delay in registration for the Star Wars Light Side Half Marathon.
Disney is having trouble getting the permits from the cities of Anaheim and Garden Grove for the half marathon course. If you’ve run the course before, you know it runs past several churches and down major streets in both Anaheim and Garden Grove. Why would this be a problem? Well, the race is run on MLK weekend. This presents a problem for local churches and other community organizations who want to hold Kingdom Day parades and other special events involving road closures.
With competing interests, the cities in question are having trouble reconciling the proposed events. That means there’s a question of whether or not the race will happen. Would runDisney still run the 5K, 10K, and kids’ races without the more profitable half marathon? Would runDisney risk upsetting fans by canceling the entire weekend? How will all of this affect legacy status?
Stay tuned to the RunDisney site for updates, and I would strongly recommend you sign up for email updates from their site so you’ll be among the first to know when the race status changes.
